Developing Romsey
Significant challenges are faced by Romsey. There are significant, inevitable changes ahead and the challenge for Romsey is to embrace, respond and capitalise on the opportunities they offer.
Business in Romsey does not exist in isolation from the community, it can only thrive "in a prosperous harmonious and supportive local community."
For that reason we will be devoting considerable attention the issues affecting the development of Southern Test Valley. We want to encourage the debate, involve individuals, businesses, local clubs and societies, schools churches and charities. They all make a real contribution to our community and have a unique insight and understanding of our local society.

Key Issues For Romsey
Population Increase There will be a significant increase in population in Southern Test Valley resulting in an increase in the number of homes by about 4,300.
Shopping Facilities We currently have largely effective town centre that is well regarded by those that use it. However a large proportion of those living in the Romsey area shop elsewhere. A population increase of a third will produce an increase demand. Failure to respond will result in the decline of the town centre as a community focus.
Commercial Development An increased population means a need for more jobs. Prosperity lies in having a high proportion of knowledge based jobs. Clearly we need a balance but the focus should be on attracting "knowledge based" comapnies to the area. This means ensuring suitable premises with the right infrastructure are available.
Lifestyles There will be an increasing demand for leisure activities. An aging population must be effectively integrated into the community - they must be seen as a valuable resource from which we can benefit and not as a drain on resources. "Lifelong learning" will become essential for both personal and community prosperity. We must develop to satisfy these needs.
Environment Caring for the environment will become increasingly important. Both globally and locally we must recognise the importance of behaving responsibly. This does not mean we simply stop any changes to the local countryside. The countryside is not "natural", it has been sculpted by man over 3000 years. Simply stopping that process and freezing its development is to abbrogate responsibilty. We should be talking about caring for they countryside rather than protecting it - the first being active while the latter is essentially reactive or passive.

Many of you will know that Hampshire County Council have decided to ban A Boards, after many years of accepting them as a useful means of advertising for shops in the town centre. This ban will affect our town centre members when they are already facing huge problems.
